Alleged genocide: Group begs Trump, international community to act on Middle Belt killings

A pan-African group, the African Sociocultural Harmony and Enlightenment Foundation (ASHE Foundation), has called on United States President Donald Trump and the international community to intervene in what it described as ongoing mass killings in Nigeria’s Middle Belt.

In a statement issued by its president, Prince Justice Faloye, the organisation claimed the violence in the region is rooted in colonial-era decisions that placed Middle Belt communities under the former Northern Protectorate.

Faloye said the arrangement weakened indigenous groups politically and contributed to decades of exclusion and insecurity.

According to him, British colonial policies subordinated the Middle Belt, home to hundreds of ethnic groups, to northern political structures, creating what he described as “unrepresentative governance” and long-term tensions.

Faloye also alleged that the suppression of traditional African knowledge systems further eroded indigenous identities. He argued that the region’s pre-colonial civilisations were marginalised by both European colonisers and Afro-Asiatic influences, deepening divisions that persist today.

He maintained that resolving the crisis would require restructuring Nigeria to recognise indigenous federating units and granting local communities more control over security and governance.

The foundation urged the U.S. government and global actors to support efforts aimed at protecting vulnerable communities and addressing what it described as the historical roots of the violence.
